Did You Know?

Did You Know? is where you can read articles about abstinence. Abstinence means different things to different people. Most people think that abstinence refers only to sex. But, abstinence, in general, can refer to many different things. Abstinence basically means to refrain from something; to refuse to indulge in practices that are unhealthy, immoral, unsafe, inappropriate, harmful, unlawful, unappealing, unethical, disrespectful, or dishonest.

At Purity Place, we are primarily committed to sharing with you a host of topics about, but not limited to, sexual abstinence from a Biblical and/or moral perspective. Some of the topics will be from the thoughts and opinions of many professionals and individuals, both young and seasoned, who have fountains of knowledge in this area. You are welcome to get involved in the discussions through My blog, were many young people ask questions and share ideas and experiences with each other - that's how we grow and learn.

I encourage you to join hundreds of other teens and young adults at Purity Place and grow to the full stature of the person you were meant to be.

Abstain from Too Much TV Viewing

In January, 2010, an articles was published by Discovery.com and CNN.com with startling news about watching too much TV. Too much TV viewing can kill you. Four or more hours of TV viewing, it was discovered, is dangerous by causing a greater risk to your health. Studies have shown that viewing more than four hours of TV per day can cause an increase in heart disease and other ailments, like diabetes.

For six years, 8,000 adults were followed and studied. Records were kept showing 80 percent of those who watched four hours or more of TV per day were more likely to die from heart disease as oppose to those who watched two hours or less per day. The study also showed that 46 percent more people were apt to die of all causes. The study resulted in 284 people dying before the study was completed. Many factors were taken into consideration when analyzing the participants, like whether they smoked or their cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

In the analysis of this study, some doctors believe the prolonged sitting in a viewing position and the inactivity of your muscles, contribute to disrupted metabolism. This sedentary activity along with unhealthy, low/non-caloric, energy-dense, snack foods, with little energy output, can contribute to even higher risks of illness and death.

I believe, this can also be a factor in constant computer use, with long hours of sitting and little body movement. If you view several hours of TV each day, try standing when viewing; take occasional walks around the room, take frequent breaks away from the TV, and select light healthy snacks. When using the computer, try propping up the keyboard or placing it on a stand, and stand up while typing or browsing the web. I did this in the workplace and it made a huge difference in how I felt throughout the day. I was more energetic and alert. Take frequent breaks from the TV and computer for exercise, and limit your viewing time. It might be even wiser to abstain from too much TV viewing all together. Certainly, exercising and eating healthier snacks might benefit your overall health as well.
